Thetis

"... and she
like a breath of wind
passed swiftly from the hall
as a dream
and leapt into the sea"

In greek mythology, Thetis is a sea nymph or goddess of water - she could probably be seen as the 'original mermaid'.

She was also the mother of Achilles. And there was that small incident at her wedding that led to the Trojan War... (
Eris, the goddess of discord, had not been invited. In spite, she threw a golden apple into the midst of the goddesses that was to be awarded only "to the fairest." The award was made during the Judgement of Paris and eventually occasioned the Trojan War.)

The poetry is from the 'Argonautica '(Voyage of the Argo) by Apollonius of Rhodes."
