On the other side...

I'm preparing for my exhibition opening on August 29th - and I'm also painting a lot, although I haven't posted on this blog too regularily...

But here's one of the new paintings, including photos of the work in progress. Catching the wonderful summer feeling - and using whatever props are around...

I often take a photo when starting a painting - and then I forget to take more... but here are two wip shots.

... ehmm.... and that's where I got so into the flow of painting that I didn't take any more photos! But I am happy with the end product, so I'm absolutely fine with getting into the flow!

Va piano

Yes, I did sketch yesterday - i just didn't post...
It was a wonderfully sunny day, and I did spend some time sketching people sitting outside having dinner. Apart from enjoying the drawing time, one of the ladies I sketched came over and we got to talk. So: a beautifuly spring day, time for art and making new friends the same time - what more can you ask for!

Number 16 in my '30 Days of Daily Sketching' challenge!

Daisy - some quck sketches

Some of you might remember Daisy, my sister's dog.
Today she was my - not really willing - subject for some very (!) quick sketches. She was watching the kids play, and couldn't hold still for more than a few seconds. So for me these sketches were all about overservation and memory... and not expecting too much from such a quick drawing session.

Number 15 in my '30 Days of Daily Sketching' challenge - halfway through my challenge!

La Cafetière

When it comes to coffee I just love my Nespresso machine - but sometimes I prefer the Cafetière or French Press. Different kind of coffee, and definitely a great subject to draw...

Memories of Majorca

Today's sketch was inspired by a photo I took on Majorca - bringing back memories of warm sun and strolls on the beach...

More Movie Sketches

Because I enjoyed drawing faces from a movie yesterday - I did the same today for my 12th sketch in my '30 Days of Daily Sketching' challenge.

The first face was done by drawing the contours blind, that is not looking at the sketch but only at the subject. Not surprisingly the result is quite... strange. I guess I could pretend I wanted to draw a caricature of the actor... ? For the two smaller ones I also tried to keep my eyes on the screen but allowed myself to peek at the sketch and adjust the drawings.

Movie Sketches

Day 11 of my '30 Days of Daily Sketching' challenge - trying to draw faces while watching a movie.
Of course I was drawing the actors, but they were not too helpful and insisted on moving... So don't expect to recognize anybody...

Easter Bloom

First of all: Happy Easter!

These lovely flowers just begged to be sketched for my 10th piece in the  '30 Days of Daily Sketching' challenge.
Another experiment regarding the approach - I started out with watercolors and then added some lines with colored pencils and a bit of pen lines.

One third of my challenge is already done! - Now I need some good ideas for what to sketch for the next two thirds!

On the Move

Inspiration taken from a photo as it's been raining cats and dogs all day. Day 9 of my '30 Days of Daily Sketching' challenge is practicing people on the move.

Reading?

It's already Day 8 of my '30 Days of Daily Sketching' challenge. It's Good Friday and we've been busy preparing for Easter - baking and coloring eggs.

So today again a quick sketch - brown pen and watercolor wash, which seems to be my favorit way of sketching so far.
I sketched one of my nieces, but as she got up too soon it does not really resemble her. I liked the pose, but in reality she was not reading but looking at her iPod... still, nice pose!

Cupcakes

My '30 Days of Daily Sketching' challenge is about learning, getting to know my drawing tools better and finding 'my style' in sketching.

Today's sketch definitely fit that bill. I learned that
a) I can't expect a good result when I'm half asleep
b) using a lot of different colored pens for the line drawing does not suit me - I don't like the look of it
c) I can try and save a sketch by using watercolor and even colored pencils on top, but it will only get me so far...

I guess I really need a good idea for what to sketch next - let me know by commenting here or on Facebook at facebook.com/regulascheifeleart.

Asheville Musicians

I was struggling with inspiration today... but finally just sat down deciding to 'just start - NOW'!
So I looked at a photo taken some time ago in Asheville, North Carolina. A charming place, and just in front of the lovely "Early Girl Eatery" a band of musicians was playing. Good memories!

So here's two of them - day 6 of my '30 Days of Daily Sketching' challenge.
The sketch was done with a 'normal' pen that's not waterproof. So once the drawing was done, I used a brush with clean water to dilute the line drawing and create a quick wash. Very efficient way of sketching!

So - help me get my inspiration for tomorrow! Let me know what to sketch by commenting here or on Facebook at facebook.com/regulascheifeleart.

My Sketching Kit

When I announced I'd be doing my '30 Days of Daily Sketching' challenge, Jim Serret commented: "Good challenge, I sketch daily and sometimes it can be hard as to what to sketch, How about your sketch gear ? Keep it fun and remember its a process."

Thanks for the suggestion Jim! I do not yet have a time-tested sketch gear, but this is what I've been using lately. Or rather: part of what I've been using.

Tip of the day: if you're planning to add color to your sketches, make sure to use waterproof pens like the Faber Castell PITT series or the Prismacolor Premier. Unless of course you want to play with the effect of the line getting deluted... which I plan to do very soon.

As I'm still very much in the 'trying-everything-out-and-buying-way-too-much-drawing-supplies' phase, I'd like to know: what is your favorite drawing tool?
Let me know by commenting here or on Facebook at facebook.com/regulascheifeleart. And keep those ideas for sketching coming!

Carrot Ginger Cake

Todays drawing for my '30 Days of Daily Sketching' was really fun!
I enjoyed putting this still life together and drawing it as quickly as possible... and then I started baking!

The muffins (not a cake after all) have just come out of the oven and smell heavenly! I think this recipe is a keeper...

Anyone recognize / know what the two dark brown things on the left are? - virtual cookies to whoever guesses right!

I realize I have not picked one of the suggestions I recieved, but keep them comming - I'll be collecting them all and will definitely pick an idea for one of my next sketches. Of course you can also follow me on Facebook at facebook.com/regulascheifeleart and comment over there.

Almost Live Drawing

It's the third day of my '30 Days of Daily Sketching'. Although it's Sunday I did not have too much time for drawing. I decided to make use of a great internet resource: YouTube videos that imitate a live drawing session! There are quick 1-minute warm up poses as well as 'long' 5-minute poses.

I did do the quickies but want to show you the long pose. I must say, quite a challenge!

I'll be getting back to your suggestions tomorrow, so keep them coming!

The 'Paradise Bakery' - Moser's in Baden

For the second sketch in my '30 Days of Daily Sketching' I kind of went with a suggestion from Angeline Marie who commented on my Facebook post: "something in your favorite store".
I wouldn't say a bakery / café is my favorite store, but then again... good coffee and freshly baked goodies, sitting outside in the early spring sun, people watching and sketching - sounds pretty perfect to me!

Moser's is one of the two main bakeries / cafés in Baden, a little town nearby. Every other Saturday I do some shopping in Baden.. and often have a coffee there. On Saturdays they have a little sales stall outside:

The bakery's slogan is "Backparadies" which roughly translates into "Paradise Bakery". Funny enough the other big bakery / café in Baden is called "Himmel", meaning "Heaven"... we really can't complain...
This sketch was done with a ballpoint pen 'on location', back at home I added the color. Beause it's so much fun!

Now - as every day of this challenge - I need your ideas of what to sketch next. I'll be collecting them all, but would love to pick one idea from each post to draw the following day. Of course you can also follow me on Facebook at facebook.com/regulascheifeleart and comment over there.

Colorful Cappuccino - 1st of 30 Days of Daily Sketching

Here's the first of my '30 Days of Daily Sketching'. Pamela commented on my last Facebook post and suggested I'd sketch a cup of coffee. That's definitely something you don't have to ask me twice, I just love a nice cappuccino.

The text reads: "Not really a lot of milk foam - it's already evening! Also: de-caff..."
I might have to explain that the cappuccino has NOT been standing around since the morning - it's just too late in the day to have so much milk. Or caffeine...

Since it was really fun doing this sketch I thought I'd share a few process fotos.
I started out by doing the lines first with a waterproof pen since I knew I'd use watercolors later on and did not want to smudge the ink.

Once I had this down... I went ahead and drank the cappuccino ;-)
And then took out my little watercolor kit and started by putting in the shadows. Not too wet, since I'm using a sketchbook that does not really 'love' the moisture...

And once this first wash dried the fun began: adding more color. And that's it. Wasn't that easy...?

Btw: this is probably my favorite coffee cup. I've had it for 20 years (but who's counting) and got it from York, UK. Love the bright, warm yellow that reminds me of all the daffodils that are in bloom all over York just around this time of the year.
Wouldn't it be great if someone from York read this post and commented? If you know someone, please send them the link to this post, I'd be so happy!

Now - as every day of this challenge - I need your ideas of what to sketch next. I'll be collecting them all, but would love to pick one idea from each post to draw the following day. Of course you can also follow me on Facebook at facebook.com/regulascheifeleart and comment over there.

Starting on a new Challenge!

Last month I was lucky to attend a wonderful workshop with Rose Frantzen - and I will write about that in another post.

But for now I've set myself a new challenge: '30 Days of Daily Sketching'.

To be honest, I wanted to call my challenge "30 Days of Art Journaling" because this does sound more sophisticated - and we should be sketching on a daily basis anyway (ehmm...).
But the thing is: I do NOT sketch on a daily basis. I need to start. Or at least get somewhere near to it... And later on... maybe... I'll do the Art Journaling as my next challenge.

The challenge is to do 30 sketches, one a day. Easy.
But I need your help:
Instead of choosing what to sketch I'd much rather have you tell me!
It can be anything: an object (like 'a pair of scissors'), a prompt ('something you can see from your window'), a concept ('something that makes you happy') - you get the idea.
Only condition: I need to be able to sketch it from life. So even though I'd love to sketch the Eiffel Tower, a quick day trip to Paris is a bit too much to ask for...

So: PLEASE tell me what to sketch by leaving a comment to this post and in the next thirty days to each of the sketch posts. I'll pick one idea and sketch it the next day and keep the rest on my 'to do list'.
Btw: you can of course also comment on my Facebook page www.facebook.com/regulascheifeleart

Rob

I thought the three ladies I painted and posted (see last two blog entries) needed some company.
The yellow-mustardy background was fun to do...

Alex

The next in my series of quick alla prima portraits.
It was fun (and a challenge) to get Alex's blond hair right, both color and shape... Still, a nice change to paint a portrait of a very fair skinned person, I usually have darker models.

Painting again - some portraits to show...

I haven't painted a lot in the last weeks and I definitely wanted to get back into the 'painting mode'.
So I did a couple of portrait paintings - or maybe rather sketches, they usually are rather quick and always done alla prima, in one go.
Once time has run out, the painting (by default) is finished - only very rarely do I change anything in a second go.

Here are the first two ladies, more portraits to come soon.

Sketch Nr 8 - Dad

A soft one, done in middle values.
I might work more on this one later, but for now it feels right...

Sketch Nr 5 - very loose...

Definitely loose, I'd say a bit messy. The joys of a 'moving target' and little time...
Back to the app "Paper by FiftyThree". The watercolor brush adds the lively color, and like with real watercolor the result can be quite blotchy.

Sketch Nr 4 - Twice as nice

Today I practiced cross-hatching. Again on the iPad with the app "ArtRage" - although I really wanted to switch to the actual sketchbook and pencil, I kept going.

And since you can save your work at any point and continue working on a copy, I though I'd show you both the black & white version as well as the next step, with color added.

Which one do you prefer?

Sketch Nr 3 - Omar S.

Again, inspired by one of those great classic movies... again David Lean, but this time "Dr. Zhivago". I know, it's really kitsch-y but once every few years...!

And again, made with "ArtRage" on iPad. This time I discovered the palette knive - almost as much fun as actually moving point on your canvas. But I still prefer the real thing.

Sketch Nr 2 - Sis

Another sketch - again digital, but this time made with "ArtRage" on iPad.This is more of a full-fledged painting app, you can choose from a dozend different tools, different pre-sets, even customize the paper or canvas you're sketching on and define your own color pallet.

To get used to the tools, I started with the pencil again, sketching and tracing the most important features. Then moved on to a mix of brush (oil and some watercolor), a little bit of pen and - airbrush. So today I shouldn't be surprised the outcome has this 'soft filter' look again, should I?

30 in 30 in 2015 - First Sketch

New year, new resolutions - new challenge!

Like in January 2014, I've decided in the very last moment to take part in Leslie Byrd Saeta's "30 in 30 Challenge". It's the third time for me, and it's always such a great learning experience and just the 'push' I need to get back into painting.

I did hesitate to sign up as I know will be very busy in January, but then I decided that I could use the challenge to make the best of the situation. So, my theme for this time will be to improve on my sketching. Any subject, any media.

To start of here's a sketch I did on my iPad with the app "Paper by FiftyThree". I started with using the pencil tool, but then also blended and added color with the brush. Not sure I like the soft finish now.

"Sketch Nr 1 - T.E. L."
Digital Sketch

I got inspired by watching the great movie "Lawrence of Arabia" (not for the first time, of course....). It is one of those films that you can watch again and again - even 52 years after it was first released! - and every single shot in the movie is worth painting. That would be another project on my list.

All my sketches are also posted on my Facebook Artist Page Regula Scheifele Fine Art - I'd love to have you follow me on Facebook or sign up to follow my blog!

January 1, 2015

Happy 2015!

I haven't been posting for some time - has it really been three months?

I also haven't really been painting, since the last two months of 2014 have been difficult. All the more reason for looking forward to this New Year that's only just started! So many possibilities, so many opportunities. I'll post again later today with my first artwork in the new year.

So let me wish you all the very best for 2015!

Oh, and remember Daisy from the January 2014 challenge? She's a real party dog...
